History
In 2000 the firms of Carruthers Insurance and Nicol Insurance merged to form Carruthers Nicol Insurance & Investments. By merging companies we have been able to provide employees and clients with the benefits of our combined resources and strengths.
Carruthers Insurance Brokers was founded in Owen Sound by C.H. “Joe “ Carruthers in 1950.
Our Port Elgin office was opened in January 1987 as a result of acquiring the business of Mather & Vincent Insurance Brokers. Further growth in 1989 came with the acquisition of H E Janke Insurance Brokers book of business.
Nicol Insurance was founded by Robert F. Nicol (Bob Jr) in 1979. Operations began first in Wiarton and soon thereafter in Owen Sound under the direction of Bob Jr and Bob Sr. In 1981 operations were expanded to the Port Elgin area.
Our Kincardine office opened under the Carruthers Nicol name in 2001 via the purchase of McKenzie Nicol Insurance Brokers.
In June of 2002, we merged our previous 2 Owen Sound locations into our present day location; formerly the Canada Trust building located in the downtown business core of Owen Sound.
Carruthers Nicol has a long history in city of Owen Sound where everything got started. We have a strong commitment to the local community and sponsor a variety of minor league sports teams and assist several local organizations. Helping these groups helps build a strong community and we encourage both businesses and individuals to get involved in your community.

CNII is a professional organization dedicated to providing insurance solutions made available to our clientele at competitive pricing. Our firm is registered as a licensed insurance broker with the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO). We act in the capacity of intermediary between the consumer (the buyer of insurance) and the insurer (insurance company accepting the risk), and as a result, earn commissions and/or fees payable by the insurer or client for providing this service.
We specialize in providing personal and commercial lines of property and casualty insurance.
With a history of providing outstanding service and assistance to our customers, we have established a base of customer referrals as a major source of our business. In addition, our insurance and investment companies with whom we conduct business recognize our efforts beyond just selling their products. As a result CNII is both recognized and distinguished as a top performer with our clients and companies.
As we approach the future, our success will continue to depend on our combined efforts to provide our clients with service, technical competence and to maintain the highest level of integrity and professionalism. Fulfilling these objectives requires commitment on the part of each of us.
